Funeral Services will be held 2:00PM Sunday 2/5/23 at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Spring Valley Cemetery in Mathiston, MS. The Graveside/Committal Services will be held at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel instead of Spring Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00PM until 8:00PM SATURDAY 2/4/23, and Noon until 2:00PM SUNDAY 2/5/23 at Oliver Funeral Home. Marcus Ellis Oswalt, 67, died Monday, January 30, 2023, at North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora surrounded by family. Funeral Services were held at the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Eupora, MS, on Sunday, February 5, 2023, at 2:00 PM with a graveside/committal service following, also at the Chapel. Visitation was held at Oliver Funeral Home in Eupora on Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM and on Sunday, February 5, 2023, from 12:00 - 2:00 PM. The funeral service was conducted by Bros. Rob Faulk, Brad Latham, Scott McBride, and Donny Buckner. Pallbearers were Dexter Jones, Kevin Jones, Scott Wright, Ken Hunter, Ronny McMinn, Teddy Wright, Sam Matson, and Dave Matson. Marcus was born December 25, 1955, in Ackerman, MS, and was the beloved son of Jesse Harrell Oswalt and Ruth Ann Ellis Oswalt. He heard God’s invitation and joined Mathiston Baptist Church at an early age. Marcus attended Wood Junior College and Mississippi State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering Technology (IET) in 1978. He married Peggy Sue Jones Oswalt on December 31, 1988, in Mathiston, and they were married for 34 years. Marcus was the owner and president of Oswalt’s Building Material, Inc. in Mathiston. He purchased the hardware and building supply company from his uncle Stanley Ellis, owner of N. S. Ellis & Sons, in 1983 and became the third generation in the family to own the business. He incorporated in 1985, and, in 2017, the business celebrated its 100th year of operation. Marcus began working at N. S. Ellis & Sons during his high school years. While in college, he worked at B & W in West Point, MS. After graduating with his IET degree, prior to purchasing the hardware and building supply business, Marcus worked as an industrial engineering standards specialist for Desoto Manufacturing Company in Jackson, MS, and for Garan Manufacturing in Starkville. Marcus enjoyed being outdoors in God’s creation. He believed his purpose in life was to help people. His customers have described him as “a great friend,” “always so kind, soft-spoken, and courteous,” and “a man of integrity and honesty.” Marcus is survived by his wife, Peggy Sue, Mathiston, MS; sister, Jessica (Ken Hunter) Oswalt, Cookeville, TN; brother, Charles Harrell “Chip” Oswalt, Mathiston; and mother-in-law Faye Harville Jones. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Kevin (Teresa) Jones, New Castle, TX; and Dexter (Darline) Jones, Mathiston; and sister-in-law Elaine (Scott) Wright, Benton, LA. Marcus was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Lloyd Lee Jones. Marcus will be missed by special aunts and nephews, along with many cousins, friends, and customers.
