Lorene Cummins

Lorene Cummins age 92, of Eupora, MS, and most recently, Alvin, TX, departed this life and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 18, 2025. She was born in Eupora, MS, to Doshie Goines Schaefer and Antley Joe Schaefer on May 23, 1932. After graduating from Mathiston High School in 1951, she attended Business School in Jackson, MS. She met Willis Cummins, also from Eupora, and they married in December 1951. They eventually moved to La Marque/Texas City, TX, after Willis completed service in the U. S. Army and began working at Union Carbide. Lorene worked as receptionist for Dr. Edward T. Keeley in Texas City for nearly 20 years, until his passing. She then job-shared with a friend, working for a private investigator. She and Willis retired and built their home back in Eupora in 1991. She had been a member of Highlands Baptist Church (La Marque, TX), College View Baptist Church (Texas City, TX), and for the last 33 years, First Baptist Church of Eupora, MS. She taught Sunday School to first and second grade children for years at College View and belonged to the Matrons Fidelis Sunday School Class at First Baptist Eupora. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her brothers and step-brothers, her sister, and also twin sisters who died at birth. She is also preceded in death by Willis, her husband of 61 years. Lorene was adored by her children. She is survived by two sons, Willis Anthony Cummins of Lewisville, TX; and Douglas Alan Cummins (Orn) of Thailand; and one daughter, Lisa Diane Anderson (Pete) of Alvin, TX; five grandchildren, Jason Springer; Matthew Cummins; Brandon Baptiste (Alyson), Paul Anderson (Lily), and Samuel Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Anna Baptiste and Kaden Custalow Springer. Also surviving are two sisters in law, Joyce Cummings, Eupora, MS and Anita Cummins, Bentonia, MS; a host of beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews, who filled her heart with joy and love. Lorene enjoyed many activities and hobbies, including Bible study and worship, tracing ancestry, gardening, canning, cooking, quilting, sewing, table games with family, feeding the local deer, and dashing through the woods on her golf cart looking for wild berries to make jelly. She also enjoyed her mornings sitting outside, listening to the songs of the mockingbirds. A Memorial Visitation will be 4:00PM until 6:00PM Friday, January 31, 2025, at Emken-Linton Funeral Home, 5100 Emmett F. Lowry Expy., Texas City, TX 77591. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Eupora, MS. A time of visitation will be held at 1:00PM until time for services at 2:00PM on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Oliver Funeral Home in Eupora. Interment will follow at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Cemetery in Webster County, MS. The Graveside/Committal Services will be held at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel instead of Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Rev. Travis Gray will officiate the services. Emken-Linton Funeral Home of Texas City, TX and Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora, MS is entrusted with all arrangements.
