A "Private Immediate Family Only" funeral service was held 2:00PM Friday 4/10/20 at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Wake Forest Cemetery in Webster County, MS. Dr. Wade Stevens and Dr. Ken Parvin officiated. Mr. Perkins was born 9/6/34 in Mathiston, MS to the late Fleety Orastus and Iva Murrah Perkins. He grew up in a loving family and had an early love for timber and the outdoors. Before the age of 18, he joined the Marine Corps and served three years in the Korean Conflict. After his military service he worked with his father and brother in the timber business, then bought and operated Perkins Feed Mill in Maben, which he later sold. Mr. Perkins joined the Natchez Trace Parkway in 1973 and retired after 28 years of service. He served on the maintenance staff as a tractor operator. At his retirement, the District Superintendent commented that "Jake, the Candy Man" was universally respected through the Parkway and the local community for his work ethic, his cordial smile, and pleasant personality. It will be impossible to replace this man. He is one of the finest men I have ever met. Mr. Perkins loved people and gave a Werthers candy to all as a symbol of his genuine care and love. He was a long time member of the Mathiston First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and friend to everyone. Above every earthly possession, Mr. Jake loved and served his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Eva Martin Perkins, Maben, MS, his children; Jan (Henry) Vaughan and Ann (William) Sansing, both of Starkville, MS, four grandchildren; Jessica Sansing (Justin) Smith, Allison Vaughan (Parker) Jones, Walt (Elizabeth) Vaughan, Trey Sansing and four great grandchildren; Luke and Lila Smith, Landon Jones and Stella Vaughan. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. The family requests any memorials be made to the Mathiston First Baptist Church Brotherhood, 24901 MS Hwy 15, Mathiston, MS, 39752 or Wake Forest Cemetery, 10681 MS Hwy 15, Mantee, MS 39751. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora was in charge of all arrangements. You may go online and sign our guest register or leave a message of condolence for the family at www.ofheupora.com
