Dr. Margaret Imogene Brown age 92, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville, MS. Imogene was born in Meadville, MS to Ray James Oglesby and Bessie Viola Temple Oglesby on August 10, 1932. She was a retired English Teacher and a member of Mathiston First United Methodist Church in Mathiston, MS. After marrying Dr. William Arthur Brown, Jr., Imogene and her husband came to Mathiston, MS in 1958. There they set up a successful medical practice and served the Mathiston area for eighteen years until Dr. Brown’s passing in 1976. After Dr. Brown’s passing Mrs. Brown continued to be a fixture in Mathiston. She finished her doctorate in education from Mississippi State University in 1990 and was encouraged by Dr. Sutphin to teach English at Wood College. She was to fill in for Ron Davis after he was injured, and she loved it and never left. She taught there until the college closed in 2003. Imogene lived independently and had a great love of the outdoors, obtaining the qualification of Master Gardener through the Extension Service. She could frequently be seen working in and around her pecan orchard. Many students at Wood remarked that her English Composition classes had them well prepared as they continued their college education. In 2024, Mrs. Brown was named Grand Marshal of the Mathiston Christmas Parade. The town of Mathiston is ever indebted to the Browns for their service to the community. Imogene is survived by two sisters, Mary Lucille “Lucy” Castle, Clinton, MS and Bessie Farr, Vicksburg, MS. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Arthur Brown, Jr. and both parents, Ray James Oglesby and Bessie Viola Temple Oglesby.
